Appearance

Strong, muscular, and powerful, the British Shorthair is a sturdy, medium to large cat with a semi-cobby torso. The head is broad and round, with a firm chin and a round, well-developed muzzle. The nose is short but never snubbed or foreshortened like that of a Persian or Exotic Shorthair. The full, chubby cheeks give the cat a chipmunk- like appearance. If the head is properly proportioned, one should be able to "cup" the skull and muzzle with two hands. The eyes should be large, round, and exepressive.
Like the Norwegian Forest Cat and the Siberian, the British Shorthair adapted to the cold weather of England by developing a very thick, short coat. The blue British Shorthair's fur feels like a plush rug and should cause the hands to tingle when stroking the cat. This breed of cat is easy to groom, since the fur does not tangle.

Color and pattern

The British Shorthair is shown in all colors and all divisions of the traditional category. The original British Shorthair was called "British Blue" because that was the only color the cat was shown in. Indeed, even though this cat comes in many different colors and patterns, some organizations still recognize blue as the only accepted color. The blue British have a thicker coat than that of, say, a black or white.

Temperament

The British Shorthair is independent yet affectionate, relaxed yet curious. The male, in particular, is especially friendly to people, even to the point of being mushy. This is an extremely quiet, no-nonsense, unflappable breed of cat. British Shorthairs are well suited for apartment life, provided the apartment is not kept too warm.
